Layout using Mixed Media

Hiya! It’s Jamie sharing a mixed media layout created with the new Vicki Boutin collection!

I had so much fun with this page and was surprised at how quickly it came together. I started out with a white sheet of cardstock and decided to add some color using the oil pastel art crayons. It couldn’t have been easier! I drew a rough square in the middle of the page, mixing a few different colors, and then I dipped my paintbrush in water and painted over them. I love how the colors mixed together! And since the white cardstock I used was textured, it just added more dimension to the paint strokes.

Once that was dry I stamped a few flowers using black ink. I love these stamps and how the color/background shows through. My brain is churning with ideas for them!

Next came an enlarged photo of my girls and their babies. I added my journaling directly to the photo before I printed it off. It made the layout a bit cleaner, especially with what all was already going on in the background. I embellished with a few die cuts and a word strip sticker and stamped the date.

I liked the page as it was but thought it could use a bit more interest. So I cut off a half inch from two sides of the cardstock. Then I adhered it to this great black and white patterned paper (from the On the Whim collection) and stitched it down. Lots of depth and texture going on in this page. I love how it turned out!

Mixed media can be intimidating, believe me I know! But you can incorporate it into your projects in simple ways. Start with lines, circles and boxes and build from there! Baby steps and soon enough you’ll be mixed media-ing like Vicki the pro!
