Hello! It’s Gail here on the blog today! I’m no stranger to incorporating circular elements in my paper crafting. From circular layers and doilies to hand stitched circles to wreath designs, I think I’ve done it all! But one thing I do shy away from is cropping my actual photos into circles . . . circa 1999. And that’s exactly what I challenged myself to do here!
So I even admitted in the first paragraph that circular photos seem like a bit of a dated technique. I was wondering if I could bring this ‘ol technique in line with my current style. And I’m pleased to say that yes, I can!
Using the Amy Tangerine ‘On a Whim’ collection, I came across a circular die cut in the ephemera pack that had the words ‘Love This’ cut from it. This was my jumping off point as I then decided to have two rows of circles the same size as this die cut (3”) across my page, alternating photos and patterned paper.
I used a 3” circle die to cut all my photos and paper to a uniform circle size. I then arranged them, spreading out the photos and colors so the design was balanced.
It was fun to pull out bits and pieces from the collection to embellish the circles! I was sure to raise some of these embellishments on foam dots to create some dimension.
I finished off the layout by adding a title and journaling below the bottom right circles. I had trimmed my background cardstock down slightly so as I could have a patterned paper border all around my layout.
I think the secret to successfully incorporating circular photos on a layout is to include other circular items too. The first step should always be to check your stash for what you have and you never know where you’ll be inspired to from there!
