How-to: A Family Mission Statement

Family Mission Palette 1

A few months ago my little family and I, all sat at our kitchen table and bounced some ideas around about what we most value.  The kids had all kinds of suggestions, like transformers and ice cream, but they also came up with some great ones like art and friendship.  Ian and I later distilled all the words we’d chosen down into a family mission statement that would guide us over the next few years as the kiddos grow and have to start making decisions about how they act towards others and how they spend their time.  Since then, I’ve been looking for a way to display our mission statement.  Finally last week I picked up a raw wood palette at the craft store and transformed it into what you see here using the Go Now Go Collection and some pieces from the Dear Lizzy Saturday Collection.

Here is a quick little tutorial if you would like to put your own altered palette together.

  1. Get yourself a raw wood palette from your local craft store.
  2. Choose your papers from the Go Now Go Collection by Shimelle and American Crafts
  3. Measure your planks and cut your paper strips accordingly. My planks were approximately 13 and ¾” long so I carefully cut another 1 and ¾” segment to cover the open end.  I attempted to make the papers line-up as best I could.

4. Using a strong paste, I use a PVA book binding glue, brush it in a thin layer over each entire wood plank, working quickly so the glue doesn’t dry before you place the paper down.

5. Push out any air bubbles with a bone folder and repeat with each plank until your palette is covered with paper.

6. Embellish to your heart’s content with all the coordinating bits and pieces from Go Now Go and Dear Lizzy Saturday.

I love how the Departure Thickers look like they may change any minute, as our values change and grow.  And those Saturday Chipboard Number Tags are perfection for this project!  Do you have a mission statement for your family?  I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
